Pirate Radio History.
Pirate radio, to cut a long story short, is unrestriced or unregulated radio broadcasting traditionally over FM radio, AM radio, or short wave signals over a wide range. But now with the advent of the internet, and a boost in consumers internet speeds, the New Age Pirate has been born, broadcasting over the internet using freely available software.
These Internet pirate radio stations usually attract a small and loyal audience and may go unnoticed by the authorities for many years , unlike their counterparts broadcasting onĀ AM/FM who can easily be heard and traced on a conventional radio.
One of the pioneers of Pirate Radio was Radio Caroline, founded by Roger Day broadcasting from a boat offshore , which gave credence to DJ’s like Kenny Everett, Tony Blackburn, and they now too broadcast over the internet, embracing the new technology.
There are now many hundreds of thousands of Internet Pirate Radio stations to be found, so it is a very tough game to get your station recognised and out to the right listeners. Before it was simply tuing a dial , and bingo but now we have to take into consideration many more factors to get your sound out there.
